A Health Fair, an Author Visit, and a Human Library

This fall promises to be a busy one at Central Rappahannock Regional Library, with over 150 events, classes, and workshops offered for the young, the old, and the in-between.  Let’s take a look at three of those events, chosen because they are happening soon, may be a bit unexpected as a library offering, or are inspiring opportunities.

Summer Reading 2017 was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who participated by reading, reviewing, playing games, and completing missions. Raffle prize winners have been drawn and notified by their local branches.

5th Annual Meet the Moon

View the moon with David Abbou, a NASA Solar System Ambassador, at the library’s Meet the Moon event on Saturday, October 28. We’re celebrating the annual International Observe the Moon Night at Porter Branch with an open house for all ages from 7:00-8:30.

Books are picture perfect way to start school year

The beginning of a new school year always feels like a new chapter, with students from preschool to college starting fresh on a year full of learning and growth, working toward goals, like reading independently, conquering quadratic equations, creating a website, or writing a research paper.  Whatever level you or your student are at, the public library has resources to help you be successful.

Jumpstart's Read for the Record: October 19, 2017

Celebrate literacy by participating in the world's largest shared reading experience. During last year's Jumpstart's Read for the Record event, over 2 million people participated. Jumpstart is hoping for even more readers this year, and the Central Rappahannock Regional Library is going to help. Together, on this special day, we'll support the Jumpstart organization in its efforts to promote early childhood education.

CRRL Guest Picks: Daniel Wallace--Engineer, STEM Teacher, and Musician

Dr. Daniel Wallace is a human factors engineer for the U.S. Navy. He is active in teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to children through demonstrations and teaches a science camp for a week every year at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Colonial Beach, VA. He is now in his 14th year as a member of the Westmoreland County Public School Board. He is also a musician, playing violin in the praise and worship band at his church.

We are very happy that he has agreed to share some of his favorite books with CRRL readers. To begin, here are favorites from his childhood:

A Small Town Love Story: Colonial Beach, Virginia

As a long-time librarian in Colonial Beach, I'm asked frequently whether we have historical information about our town, which dates back to 1892. We had very little. In 2016, I had a chance to change this, thanks to a conversation with local author Sherryl Woods and the enthusiasm of a group of women whose memories stretch back for decades. This was one of the most memorable and fun activities I've ever been involved with.
