Due to the cancellation of our previously scheduled staff training, CRRL branches will have a modified schedule on Friday, September 14, 2018:

Fredericksburg Branch will be closed due to building maintenance.

Snow, Salem Church, Howell, and Porter will be open 9:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Spotsylvania Towne Centre will be open 10:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Cooper, Montross, and Newton branches in Westmoreland County will close at 1:00 p.m.

Book Corner: Books Might Help Ease School Anxiety

Whether your children go back to school this week or have already been at it since August, it is a time for settling into school routines. Books and stories are great ways to help children understand and become more comfortable with changes and challenges they might experience in school, can help open the door to conversations about difficult or uncomfortable topics, or can simply be a way to share a laugh.

Woodcarving Demonstration

On Saturday, September 22 at the Howell Branch from 2:00-5:00, learn about the creative process and the art of woodworking with wood carving artist, Joshua Stepney.

Mr. Stepney, who carves traditional African masks and figures as well as more contemporary sculptures, will demonstrate how he creates some of his works of art. In addition to his woodworking, Mr. Stepney works with Peace Culture Club, an organization which introduces children to art.

My grandmother, the daughter of an illiterate Norwegian mother and a literate Norwegian father, attended college because her parents believed education was the pathway to self-sufficiency. (It is!) One of her most prized possessions was a book of Walt Whitman’s poems. I have that book today. On the torn inside cover, there is a mysterious dedication (love note?) from a professor.
